Not only are they relatively easier on the pocket, but road trips are the best way to have a little fun and frolic on your own terms. So next time you feel like you need a new weekend getaway; just pack your bag, fill up the fuel tank and get going!

1. Manali to Leh

Why it’s a must: Nothing can match the beauty of the road winding amidst snow and mountains from Manali to Leh, and who wouldn’t want to see the magic of the location which captured our hearts in the hit song from Jab We Met; ‘Ye Ishk Haye’.

About the road: With an altitude of 3-4 km above sea level and spanning a length of about 480 kms, this entrancing road is open for around 5 months of the year mostly during the summer till mid-October.

Travel Time: The journey takes approximately 2 days with one stop over in between for rest and taking in the changing scenery and climate.


2. Chennai to Pondicherry (along the East Coast road)



Why it’s a must: This is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful roads to travel along especially if your vehicle is an airy two-wheeler. With the ocean-side lanes and the cool breeze in your hair, you’ll probably never want the road to end!

About the road: This road spans a length of 160 km and passes through a ton sight-worthy spots including Mahabalipuram (UNESCO World Heritage Site), Kalpakkam, Idaikkazhinadu (Alamparai Fort), Mudaliarkuppam and Marakkanam etc.

Travel Time: In all, the road trip will take you about 3 hours, but of course it’ll take longer cause there’s a lot for you to stop and see along the way!

3. Puri to Konark

Why it’s a must: The road that connects Puri and Konark in the heart of Odisha is one of the most scenic and beautiful roads for photography! Rife with stunning brambles and branches and exhilarating beaches this road should definitely be on your bucket list!

About the road: The road is a short stretch of just 36kms but the number of beaches along the way is staggering including Beleswar beach, Balighai beach etc.

Travel Time: The road in itself won’t take longer than an hour to traverse but that just leaves you more time to enjoy the scenery along the way.

4. Pune to Mumbai ( road trip to Lonavala)


Why it’s a must: This is one of the most popular road trips and the lush green foliage and picturesque surroundings are something that will give you an otherworldly. Don’t forget to make a stop at Lonavala if you’re in the area and planning for a retreat.

About the road: The Mumbai-Pune expressway is around 93 km long and not open to two wheelers although the Mumbai-Pune highway is also in good condition and open to all vehicles and is known as one of the best road trips in India.

Travel Time: The trip itself is a rather short one and will take you between 2 to 3 hours!

5. Guwahati to Tawang


Why it’s a must: It’s true that the Northeast has an entirely ethereal beauty and this is one road trip that crosses elegantly through its beautiful terrain. If you are looking for a road trip that is equal parts magic and adventure, then this is the one for you!

About the road: The road spans a staggering 520kms of captivating sights and scenic views that are definitely a sight to behold!

Travel Time: As the road is long, this is a trip that will take you around 10 hours. In addition, you’ll need to make some stops for rest and food and of course, photos!
