Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh has been sentenced to 20 years of imprisonment for being guilty of committing rape. But, the circumstances prior to the verdict were not without hurdles. Tens of thousands of Dera followers gathered in many regions of Northern India that led to continuous upheavals. So much that thousands of paramilitary troops had to be deployed to enforce peace and order. Now, it has come to the revelation that the protests were staged by Dera Sacha Sauda itself, who paid Rs. 5 crore to criminal elements!
The Haryana Police is investigating claims that top Dera Sacha Sauda functionaries paid a ‘supari’ that is a contract of Rs.5 crore to criminal elements to fuel protests in Panchkula and other places.
Haryana Director General of Police B.S. Sandhu said,
“We are investigating this. We are trying to nab two Dera functionaries, Chamkaur Singh and Nain, who are said to be involved in this.”
The protests were on a large scale that spread for a couple of days, leading to cancellations of trains, closure of schools and offices, death of 38 people and 264 non-fatalities.
Security was tightened around the Dera headquarters near Sirsa town on Wednesday following the approval granted by the Punjab and Haryana High Court to the Haryana government to search and sanitize the premises
The security was tightened around the Dera Sacha Sauda headquarters in Haryana’s Sirsa district ahead of a “sanitation process” to be carried out on Thursday. An indefinite curfew was imposed around the premises, with certain relaxations during mornings and evenings.
Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar said,
“Some objectionable items were seized during searches at their premises following the arrest of convicted Dera chief.”
Authorities in Haryana have carried out sanitization of 117 ‘Naam Charcha Ghars’ associated with the Dera, where its followers assemble for prayers and discussions.
