Electrification remains a major challenge for India even after decades of independence and despite being one of the fastest growing economies in the world. However, an Indian state has achieved the impossible by providing electricity to each and every household and set an example for others to follow suit! Which state you ask? Kerala!
Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan Monday said the state has become the first in the country to provide electricity to every home.
As per central government, the title of “total electrified” goes to those villages who have atleast 10% households with electricity. So, assuming power since last May, the Kerala government has taken it upon itself to power every household in all villages in the state.
The massive project cost the state Rs 175 crore and lit up around 1.5 lakh households. This is the official post released by the CM’s office on Facebook!
Kerala’s momentous feat is of a mammoth scale and should lay the domino effect on other states, to focus on the rural development, with electrification being on top of the list. In today’s times, where a lot of flak is being generated for unnecessary issues pertaining to freedom of expression, how people dress, what celebrities speak, which get undivided attention, such an example of Kerala is a welcome change.
