Few have had the valor to express about the grim realities of life and the society like Saadat Hasan Manto, the Indo-Pak writer. His uncensored and unfiltered literature has been controversial for some, whilst an exalted epitome of ‘freedom of speech’ for others. It was only a matter of time when this celebrated South-Asian writer would be portrayed on the Silver Screen, by none other than the talented Nawazuddin Siddiqui!
Directed by acclaimed Nandita Das, Manto is an upcoming biopic movie of the writer who lived during the post-independence era. In order to depict Manto with as much perfection as possible, Siddiqui refused to resort to any sort of prosthetic and chose to have a natural look.
Since no video or audio footage of the author was available for research, Siddiqui developed Manto’s speaking style by studying the flair in his writing! In order to give us a glimpse of what we can expect from the movie, a short video titled In Defence of Freedom has been made by IndiaToday. It shows Nawazuddin as Manto giving a speech on ‘Freedom of Speech’.
The performance delivered by Nawazuddin is top-notch with apt dialogues stressing the important points of the society that are often overlooked and sometimes considered a taboo to discuss and write. It definitely makes us eager for this critical drama!
