With an aim to empower women, Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently launched the subsidized scooter scheme for women. The scheme is specifically targeted towards working women and to promote employment amongst women. The scheme was launched on the occasion of the 70th birth anniversary celebrations of late chief minister J. Jayalalithaa as ‘Amma scooter scheme’.
Modi paid tribute to the departed leader and said that the scooter scheme would go a long way in the empowerment of women. He also said that the empowerment of women would mean the empowerment of the entire family.
Under the ‘Amma scooter scheme’ women whose annual income is less than INR 2.5 lakh p.a. is eligible to get the scooter where she would get a 50 % subsidy or INR 25,000 on purchasing a two-wheeler with less than 125 cubic capacity.
The scheme has been successfully launched in the state of Tamil Nadu and would be a forerunner for other state governments said the Prime Minister.
As per the scheme, only one woman per family is eligible for a subsidy on the scooter and also preference would be given to the families run by women, widows, disabled women and transgenders.
